  • Check Me Out - Haven September 2024

NEVER SAW ME COMING By Tanya Smith Tanya Smith, a former tech-savvy prodigy turned high-profile criminal, tells the story of her transformation and her daring fight against a lengthy prison sentence. Even knowing she was a criminal, I found myself em- pathizing with her story - the challenges of overcoming stereotypes and offers a distinctive insight into her life and decisions, making her a unique and compelling voice in the true crime genre. GUILTY CREATURES By Mikita Brottman “Guilty Creatures” tells the story of Mike Williams’s puzzling disappearance and the ensuing contentious marriage of his widow, Denise, to his best friend, Brian Winchester. Through thorough research, the book reveals a grim story of betrayal and murder that transpired over eighteen years, captivating and shocking readers. What is more interesting is how the aftermath of the crime continued to affect Brian and Denise as they tried to carry on with their lives. THE BARN By Wright Thompson This is one of those books that is important to read and yet very difficult to read. “The Barn” explores the long-buried truths of Emmett Till’s murder. It reveals the cover-up surrounding the 1955 crime and its profound impact on American society. The book examines the forces of racism and power that shaped the event and its continued sig- nificance, making readers feel the weight of its historical impact WHEN THE NIGHT COMES FALLING By Howard Blum The shocking murders of four University of Idaho students stunned the nation. Blum puts forth the basics, includ- ing the rigorous police investigation that led to Bryan Christopher Kohberger’s capture. It presents a compelling narrative that uncovers unsettling truths about the case, shedding light on the circumstances and impact of these crimes and the profound loss experienced by the victims’ families. STARKWEATHER By Harry N. MacLean In 1958, Charles Starkweather, known as America’s first modern mass killer, carried out a chilling spree of brutal murders across Nebraska. The book also provides his girlfriend Caril’s side of the events - which casts a very dif- ferent light on her role (she was only 14 at the time of the murders). The book provides a comprehensive account of the crime spree, its far-reaching impact, and its long-last- ing influence on American culture. THERE IS NO ETHAN By Anna Akbari Reading this book, I first thought - this couldn’t be hap- pening, but it did, and it still does. The catfisher is Ethan Schuman, a charismatic individual who manipulates three women emotionally without seeking financial gain - which is the twist. The book delves into how technology facilitated this manipulation and explores the broader implications of trust and identity in the digital age. BRINGING BEN HOME By Barbara Bradley Hagerty This is an excellent examination of the broken justice system. In 1987, Ben Spencer was wrongly convicted of murder due to flawed police work and prosecutorial misconduct. He spent thirty years in prison before being exonerated in 2021. Spencer’s case highlights the legal sys- tem’s flaws and how states are now implementing reforms to prevent such injustices.
